✅ Check the forecast.
Before every ride, hit up your local avalanche center (Avalanche.org, Avalanche.ca, etc.) for updated danger ratings. Conditions can change overnight.
✅ Pack your gear — and know how to use it.
Beacon, probe, shovel. No exceptions. Take a minute to practice with your group before heading out.
✅ Ride with a plan.
Pick safe zones, identify escape routes, and always ride one at a time on steep slopes.
✅ Stay alert to red flags.
Fresh slides, cracking snow, or a hollow “whumph” sound = back off and reassess.
✅ Take an avalanche safety course.
